Gary Coleman Dead at 42/The Diff'rent Strokes

Sad news out of Utah today, former child star Gary Coleman has passed away. The Diff'rent Strokes actor apparently suffered an intercranial hemorrhage at his Santaquin home on Wednesday and had been on life support after slipping into a coma midday Thursday. Utah Valley Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Janet Frank said life support was terminated and Coleman died today at 12:05 p.m. MDT
Coleman became a star at age 10 after Diff'rent Strokes premiered on NBC in 1978. The show lasted six seasons on NBC and two on ABC and coined the popular phrase, "Whachu talknin' 'bout?" Financial, legal and medical problems followed Coleman after the show's ultimate cancellation, as he suffered from kidney disease that stunted his growth.

In 2003, he ran in the bizarre election to replace Gov. Gray Davis in California, along with porn star Mary Carey and Hustler mogul Larry Flynt. He came in 8th place with 12,488 votes.

"This is really interesting and cool and I've been enjoying the heck out of it because I get to be intelligent, which is something I don't get to do very often," he said of the election. "I want to escape that legacy of Arnold Jackson. I'm someone more. It would be nice if the world thought of me as something more."
